We’re kicking off the new season with a new style to our THROWBACK THURSDAY’s (and we hope you like it!) We are starting off this fall with a look at the 2010 Tony Award winning musical MEMPHIS. Nominated for 8 Tony awards and taking home 4, Memphis tells the story of the forbidden love between a white music DJ and a black lounge singer both trying to make it in the music business in the 1950s. They face the prejudices of society and their families as they both fight for their love and their dreams. With an incredible cast (including Montego Glover and Chad Kimball) and an outstanding series of musical numbers, Memphis is an iconic musical that reflects the struggle of minorities trying to make it in the entertainment business (which is still pretty relevant to this day). FUN FACT: Memphis was loosely based on the true story of Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips. We hope you enjoy the clip below of the 2010 Tony performance!
Did you see Memphis while it was on Broadway from 2009-2012? If so, what did you think of the show? How do you think this story compares to other musicals about forbidden love? Scroll down to share your thoughts in the comments below!
